Oilers Take Down the Cougars to Advance in OMHA
The Atom Oilers had a snowy drive to Mt. Brydges Sunday morning to take on the Cougars in their final round robin game.  A win or a tie and the Oilers would advance on to play Lambeth in the 6 point OMHA series.
The Oilers came out fast and got on the board in the first minute but Mt. Brydges kept pressing and kept it close all game long.  Eventually the Oilers would score late in the third to seal a 3-2 victory and advance onwards in OMHA play downs.

At the 59sec mark of the opening minute, William Hull blasted a 'Bobby Hull Special' from the top of the circle and hit the goalie right in the head leaving a rebound that Jace McGrail fired home for a 1-0 lead.  Stanley MacDonald also picked up an assist on the play.

Mt. Brydges tied the game 5 minutes later on a clearing pass give-away that was blasted over the shoulder of net minder Noah Bright.  Score was tied 1-1.  The Oilers fought back and with 1:20 left in the first period Andrew Jaques scooped up a pass from Hull and danced in and went top shelf with a backhander.  Oilers back on top 2-1.

50seconds into the Second period resulted in another mad scramble of miscues and failed clearing attempts which ended up in another goal by Mt. Brydges to tie the game at 2-2.

Much of the second period was spent playing helter skelter hockey with very little flow with lots of icings and off-sides sprinkled with a few dumps with little chase.

The game remained tied until the dying moments of the third when the Oilers hemmed the Cougars in their own end.  Several face-off wins and scoring chances put the pressure on the Cougars but their goalie responded to the challenge and stopped them all.  Mt. Brydges called a time out to talk it over and were able to get the puck out of their end and pull their goalie for the extra attacker.  Mt. Brydges needed a win to have any hopes of moving on in OMHA play downs.

Jace McGrail scooped up a pass from Jaques in the neutral zone and side stepped one defender and shot towards the empty net while falling down.  The puck hit the center of the yawning cage for a 3-2 victory.

There was only 2 minor penalties for each team and was an even battle right to the end.

Oilers now await the schedule for the series vs Lambeth Lancers.
