Oilers Started Fast and Went Downhill Quick
The Oilers came into Saturday's match riding a high after tying the powerful Lambeth Lancers on Tuesday night and jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead. It quickly went South as Lambeth scored 8 unanswered goals to skate easily to an 8-2 victory.
The Oilers scored 2 minutes in as they worked the puck deep and Reid King fed the puck behind the net where Jace McGrail picked it up and found William Hull in the high slot and he fired a wrister past a helpless Lancer goalie and the Oilers were on the board leading 1-0.
Just over two minutes later Andrew Jaques picked up a loose puck down low and found Noah Harse wide open at the point. Noel Sanderson provided a great screen as Harse let the clapper go and found the back of the net. Oilers were up 2-0. Things were looking good.
Then Lambeth started getting their feet under them and started getting pucks deep on the Oilers and the Oilers had a difficult time getting the puck out as several turnovers and a couple 'flukey' goals put the Oilers on their heels. The period ended tied at 2-2.
The Oilers continued to have difficult times getting through the neutral zone and getting pucks deep which led to more time spent in their own end which is never a good plan for success. Time after time Lambeth found open guys in the slot or just off the corner of the net and were open for good scoring opportunities. Lambeth scored three goals in the second and three more in the third to sink the Oilers 8-2.
The goaltending duties were shared by Noah Bright and Kento Gudz who didn't get much help in front of them.
The Oilers will have to have short memories as they get right back on the horse and head to Mt. Brydges Sunday morning for a date with the Cougars who are wanting to take a bite out them. Come ready to compete boys, you can do it with teamwork, heart and determination.
