Oilers Begin New Year on Winning Note
The Novice Oilers began 2014 posting a big 7-2 win over their arch rival Mooretown Storm. The Oilers jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one and added 3 more in the second period before rounding out the scoring with 2 more goals in the third. Mooretown's goals came from Jaxon Priddle with one in the second and one in the third.
The Oilers started the New Year with a a few line-up shuffles having three volunteer forwards who wanted to play a period each on defense and allowed 3 regular defensemen to play a period on forward. All players who played different positions did very well and held their own and learned some new things about different positions.
In the first period, Jace McGrail scored back to back goals 3 minutes apart to post a 2-0 lead. The first goal was set up by 'rookie d-man' Nathan Perry. The second goal was set up by Reed Douglas and Noel Sanderson.
In the second period, Shane Knight was Johnny on the Spot camped in front of the net and finished off a three way passing play from Will Hull and Jace McGrail and put the Oilers up 3-1. Logan Crummy then hopped on a rebound in the slot and had all kinds of time to roof a wrister assisted by Shane Knight. Oilers up 4-1. With time winding down in the second period McGrail intercepted a pass at his blueline and skated in and wristed a high shot to the top corner to put the Oilers up 5-1 after 2 periods of play.
Shane Knight scored his second of the game in a similar fashion as his first....being in the right spot at the right time with his stick on the ice and banged home a Reid King rebound. Oilers lead 6-1. Mooretown scored to make it 6-2. Noel Sanderson finished out the scoring assisted by Zach Wilson as they worked the puck down low and crashed the net. Sanderson was able to find the puck in a maze of legs and bury the puck. Final score 7-2 Oilers.
Phoenix Timmington and Maxim Egan had solid games on forward and defense respectively.
Great Job Oilers. special mention to Miller Mailloux, Reed Douglas and Nathan Perry who each played a period on defense and Will Hull , Jace McGrail and Brady Busby-McEachen who all played a period on forward. More opportunities will be available vs Dresden on Saturday.
Kento Gudz was solid in net as he posted his 15th win of the season.
