Former Petrolia Squire pens hockey book
A longtime member of the Petrolia Squires has written and published his first book, and it’s all about hockey.

Brad Burton said “Making The Cut” follows 16-year-olds D.J. Roberts and Brad Martinsen and their efforts to crack the lineup of a Junior A hockey team in its inaugural season.

He said it was originally geared toward more of an adult audience when he first started writing in 2005, but it transformed into a novel for all ages.

“They are coming into training camp, do a few intersquad scrimmages, and then progress into a fictional tournament that I came up with called the ‘Labour Day Classic’,” said Burton. “It follows the progression through to the end of the tournament when they finalize the roster.”

Burton said paperback or eBook versions are available at the Book Keeper on Exmouth Street and at a number of online book stores, including Amazon.

“At the start of this year I was able to finish off the last 20 per cent of the book and then started into the publishing process,” he said. “It was pretty exciting to finally put the final word down on the paper.”

Burton, a 34-year-old Wingham native and Sarnia resident, has played for a number of squads including Huron Perth Lakers AAA, the Wingham Ironmen, Clinton Radars, and Lucknow Lancers.

He’s currently coaching Sarnia’s U-7 team.
